Eco-Friendly Initiatives
EC+O Project
Please Support Our Environmental Initiatives
In 2008, Earth Celebration launched the EC+O Project to make the festival more eco-friendly, starting with initiatives to reduce the waste generated by the event. With the environment and the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in mind, EC kindly asks everyone who joins the festival to help us reduce EC’s impact on the earth. Here’s how you can help:
(1) Please bring your own chopsticks and cutlery
Help us greatly reduce waste by bringing your own chopsticks and cutlery (spoons, forks, etc.) to EC and using it every time you eat at Harbour Market, Fringe Market at Triangle Park, or other event venues. If you don’t bring your own, you can purchase reusable cutlery* onsite. Look for cutlery stalls at EC event venues where food is sold. Proceeds from the sales will be used for waste management and to help us run new eco-friendly initiatives moving forward. There will be designated sinks set up at Harbour Market and Triangle Park where you wash their own cutlery, ready to reuse. This year, EC Committee will recommend to all food and beverage vendors that they do not provide plastic utensils and plastic bags. *We plan to sell reusable chopsticks, spoons, and forks.
(2) Please bring your own shopping bag
This will greatly help reduce the number of plastic bags used at the event. Please remember your bag(s) when you visit Harbour Market, Earth Celebration Fair, and other local stores.
(3) Please separate your trash
At Harbour Market, we will be actively promoting and facilitating trash separation at a designated trash and recycling station. Please help us reduce EC’s impact on the environment by separating your trash carefully and disposing of it in the appropriate bins. Staff will be available to assist, so feel free to ask if anything is unclear. We greatly appreciate your understanding and cooperation.
Natural, Thoughtful EC Merchandise
We developed this year’s lineup with ethical consumption in mind. The EC 2024 goods feature artwork by Atsuko Ogawa, a Sado-based illustrator who designed our festival’s logo. They are colorful, practical items with soothing nature-themed motifs that you can enjoy during EC and for years to come.
EC merch is available now from Kodo Online Store (Japanese), and at EC Shop during Earth Celebration.
Organic Cotton T-shirts
This T-shirt is made of cotton grown on farmland that stopped using pesticides and chemical fertilizers over three years ago. You’ll love the feel of this soft fabric. Available in four easy-breezy nature-themed colors.
Cutlery Set
Made from bamboo fiber, this cutlery set has a pair of chopsticks, a spoon, and a fork. It comes with a compact case, so it’s easy to keep in your bag for eating out. We hope you’ll use it at EC and beyond to help reduce waste.
Jute Tote Bag
This natural-fiber bag can hold a lot and it fits comfortably over your shoulder. The material is a combination of jute—a type of hemp that is quick-drying and breathable—and 10 oz. canvas fabric. Bring it with you to Harbour Market and EC Fair, take it home full of treats from Sado Island.
Tenugui Towel
The tenugui (hand towel) is an everyday must-have item in Japan that has a wide range of uses. To name a few, you can use it as home decor or a table mat, to wrap things, wipe your brow, or cover your head. At Earth Celebration, many people use them as a bandana to keep the sun off their neck or head. Small, light, and multifunctional, it’s a traveler’s best friend.
